An Evening Dedicated to Culture and Argentine Tradition in the Spirit of “Wine Connects”

Edited by Anna Popper

Malbec is considered Argentina’s signature grape variety and one of the country’s most successful wine exports. Originally from France, the grape found ideal growing conditions in Argentina, particularly in the Mendoza region, where high-altitude vineyards produce wines celebrated for their rich fruit character, elegance and remarkable diversity.

Malbec World Day was first celebrated on 17 April 2011. The date commemorates the Argentine statesman Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, who in 1853 officially presented a proposal to transform and modernize Argentina’s wine industry – a historic milestone regarded as the foundation of Argentine viticulture and the future success of Malbec.

The Embassy of the Argentine Republic in Hungary celebrated a new edition of Malbec World Day in Budapest with a professional wine tasting at WineHub, a key venue for promoting Argentine wines in the Hungarian market. The event aimed to highlight the quality, diversity and growing international presence of Argentine Malbec, one of the most recognized expressions of the country’s winemaking identity.

The evening brought together representatives from the gastronomy and hospitality sectors, importers, specialized journalists, business leaders and wine enthusiasts, creating an opportunity to introduce Argentina’s wine culture to new consumers, restaurants and local partners.

In his opening remarks, Ricardo Vignolo, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Argentine Embassy in Hungary, emphasized that Malbec World Day represents a special opportunity to showcase one of Argentina’s most emblematic products to an international audience while further strengthening the presence of Argentine wines in Hungary and Central Europe.

In 2026, International Malbec Day is celebrated under the motto “Your Malbec, Your Call”, inviting wine lovers to enjoy Malbec in a free, personal and authentic way. The message reflects the remarkable diversity of styles, regions and winemaking approaches that characterize contemporary Argentine wine production. Guests had the opportunity to taste a carefully selected range of wines expressing this diversity and quality, accompanied by traditional Argentine empanadas.

Among the featured labels were wines from Tutu Vineyards, Haraszthy Vineyards – Fantástico 2021 and ICON Malbec 2021 – Mi Vino Malbec 2024, as well as Escorihuela Gascón with 1884 Organic & Biodynamic Vineyard Malbec 2024, 1884 Gran Reserva Malbec 2023, and 1884 The President’s Blend Malbec 2021.

Today, Malbec perfectly reflects the incredible versatility of Argentina’s flagship variety – fresh and vibrant, yet refined and expressive, with a wide range of styles and distinctive regional expressions.

The evening was further enhanced by a tango performance from Béla Barabás and Katalin Dillmont, the Hungarian champions in the Milonguero category of the Tango BA World Cup 2026 Preliminary Round in Budapest, adding one of the most iconic expressions of Argentine culture to the experience.

Special recognition was given to Carlos Coelho, owner of WineHub and Haraszthy Vineyards in Etyek and a great wine expert, who led the tasting and explained the unique characteristics of the presented wines to the guests.

The Argentine Embassy expressed its sincere gratitude to the wineries, producers and local partners who contributed to the success of the event, as well as to all those who continuously support the promotion of Argentine wines in Hungary.

Through initiatives like this, the Argentine Embassy in Hungary continues to foster Argentina’s commercial and cultural presence, convinced of the significant potential of its wines and premium products in both the Hungarian and regional markets.
