Commemorating Three Centuries of History
Edited by Anna Popper
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia celebrates its Foundation Day on 22 February, marking the establishment of the first Saudi state in 1727 by Imam Mohammed bin Saud. This annual commemoration, introduced as a national holiday in 2022, honours the Kingdom’s rich history, deep-rooted traditions, and enduring sovereignty.

Foundation Day highlights the unwavering bond between Saudi citizens and their leadership – a bond that has remained strong for nearly three centuries. The first Saudi state, with Diriyah as its capital, was fully sovereign, with Islam as its religion and the Quran and Sunnah as its constitution – principles that continue to guide the nation today.
The legacy of Imam Mohammed bin Saud laid the foundation for Saudi Arabia’s political, social, economic, and cultural development. Through the dedication of successive monarchs, Saudi Arabia has grown into a modern, thriving nation.

A Remarkable Celebration in Budapest
On the occasion of Saudi Foundation Day 2025, H.E. Mr. Majed Abdulaziz M. Al Abdan, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Hungary, hosted a grand celebration and luncheon at the Saudi Embassy premises.
Distinguished guests included members of the diplomatic corps, senior officials from the Hungarian government, representatives from cultural, academic, and economic circles, and Saudi nationals.

The guests were welcomed in a majestic traditional tent in the embassy garden, designed to reflect Saudi Arabia’s historical heritage. The warm and authentic atmosphere evoked the Kingdom’s rich traditions and offered attendees a glimpse into its deep-rooted cultural legacy.

A Tribute to Saudi Traditions
In addition to the richly decorated tent adorned with symbolic motifs and objects, guests had the unique opportunity to experience Saudi Arabia’s falconry tradition. These majestic birds, an emblem of Saudi heritage, were admired up close, and many invitees even held them on their arms – a highlight of the event that immersed attendees in one of the Kingdom’s most cherished cultural practices.

The decorations and displays throughout the event paid tribute to Saudi heritage, while roll-ups set up in the garden showcased the increasing number of prestigious international events Saudi Arabia is set to host. From diplomacy and culture to sports and innovation, the Kingdom’s growing global prominence was widely admired by the participants.

The event concluded with a luncheon featuring a selection of traditional Saudi specialties, offering guests an authentic taste of the Kingdom’s rich gastronomy.

A National Celebration of Historical Legacy and Progress
The Foundation Day anniversary offers a moment to reflect on the Kingdom’s three-century-long journey. Since its inception, Saudi Arabia has prioritized stability, national security, and the well-being of its people, overcoming numerous challenges with strong leadership and national unity.
Throughout its history, the Kingdom has remained committed to serving the Two Holy Mosques, preserving its heritage, and fostering national pride. Today, under the visionary leadership of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and HRH Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Saudi Arabia is undergoing unprecedented transformation in various sectors of society.

Saudi Arabia’s Growing Global Role
Saudi Arabia continues to play an increasingly influential role on the international stage, demonstrating its commitment to progress and global stability. The Kingdom’s successful diplomatic efforts, particularly in peacekeeping initiatives and conflict resolution, are widely recognized. Recently, Saudi Arabia has been actively engaged in key global peace issues, reinforcing its position as a pivotal player in fostering dialogue, mediation, and international cooperation for a more stable and secure world.
Furthermore, Saudi Arabia is emerging as a global hub for hosting prestigious international events in various fields, including diplomacy, culture, sports, and innovation. This growing prominence was reflected in the event’s displays, highlighting upcoming initiatives and major sporting events that showcased the Kingdom’s dynamic progress and international engagement.

A Vision for the Future
Saudi Foundation Day is more than a commemoration of the past – it is a reaffirmation of national unity and the Kingdom’s steadfast journey toward a prosperous future.
