On 13 October 2026, H.E. Mr. Pekka Kaihilahti, the new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Finland to Hungary, presented his credentials to H.E. Dr. András Baka, President of Hungary, at Sándor Palace in Budapest, officially marking the beginning of his diplomatic mission in Hungary.

Ambassador Kaihilahti was accompanied on this important occasion by Ms. Kaisa Leidy, Counsellor, and Ms. Aino Ronkainen, Consul at the Embassy of Finland in Budapest. Following the ceremony, President Baka wished the new Ambassador every success in his diplomatic endeavours.

In keeping with diplomatic tradition, the Ambassador subsequently laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Heroes’ Square, paying tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for their country.

A New Chapter in Finnish-Hungarian Relations
Reflecting on the beginning of his mission in Hungary, Ambassador Kaihilahti expressed his hopes for the future of bilateral relations: “We trust that in the coming years we can open a new chapter in the relationship between Finland and Hungary.”
His message resonates with the longstanding and multifaceted ties between the two nations, which extend beyond diplomatic relations to encompass a shared linguistic heritage, cultural affinities and close people-to-people contacts.
An Experienced Diplomat with Extensive International Expertise

Ambassador Pekka Kaihilahti brings a wealth of diplomatic experience and a distinguished record of international service to his new assignment in Budapest.
He joined Finland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 1999, embarking on a diplomatic career spanning more than a quarter of a century. From 2022 to 2026, he served as Ambassador of Finland to Indonesia, ASEAN, and Timor-Leste. Prior to that, from 2021 to 2022, he was Acting Director General of the Department for Asia and the Americas at Finland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs. During that period, he also served as Special Representative for Afghanistan and as a Senior Official for the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM). Between 2018 and 2021, Ambassador Kaihilahti held the position of Deputy Director General of the Department for Asia and the Americas. His previous international postings included serving as Deputy Head of Mission at Finland’s Mission to NATO and as Deputy Chief of Mission at the Finnish embassies in Mexico and Brazil.
In addition to his diplomatic role in Hungary, Ambassador Kaihilahti has been accredited as Finland’s non-resident Ambassador to Slovenia since 2026.
Ambassador Kaihilahti holds a Master’s degree in Political Science (International Relations) from the University of Helsinki. He is proficient in several languages – including Finnish, Swedish, English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese – with fair command in Chinese and a basic understanding of Bahasa Indonesia. His personal interest in languages is further evidenced by the fact that, immediately upon his arrival in Hungary, Ambassador Kaihilahti began learning Hungarian.
A Special Bond Through Finno-Ugric Heritage
Finland holds a special place in Hungary’s international relations through the shared linguistic heritage of the two nations – both of whose languages belong to the Finno-Ugric branch of the Uralic language family. Although Finnish and Hungarian have evolved along distinct historical paths, their linguistic kinship has long inspired scholarly interest, cultural dialogue, and a sense of connection between the two peoples. This affinity is also reflected in the numerous twin-city partnerships between Finnish and Hungarian municipalities. Over the years, these partnerships have created opportunities for cultural exchanges, educational initiatives and cooperation between local communities, strengthening mutual understanding beyond the sphere of official diplomacy.
As Ambassador Kaihilahti begins his assignment in Budapest, the shared heritage and established partnerships between Finland and Hungary provide a solid basis for further strengthening the friendship between the two countries.

Another milestone in celebrating the shared linguistic and cultural heritage of Finland and Hungary is set for 2027: Geresdlak, a village in Baranya County in southern Hungary, will hold the title of “Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture”. Also known as the “village of exhibitions”, Geresdlak offers a variety of permanent attractions and plans to welcome visitors throughout the year with a diverse programme of cultural events celebrating Finno-Ugric heritage.
The Hungarian village already maintains close ties with Finland, and several Finnish nationals have settled in Geresdlak. The Finnish presence is also reflected in local life – from saunas to bilingual street signs – symbolising the enduring ties between the two communities.
In 2027, the presentation of Finno-Ugric cultural heritage will take centre stage in Geresdlak, offering a unique opportunity to celebrate the linguistic, historical and cultural bonds between Hungary, Finland, Estonia and other Finno-Ugric communities.
The Diplomatic Press Agency extends a warm welcome to H.E. Ambassador Pekka Kaihilahti and wishes him every success in his diplomatic mission with his team in Hungary.
