The city of Budapest will once again become the setting for one of the world’s major Argentine tango events by hosting, from 23 to 26 April 2026, for the second consecutive year, the European Preliminary of the Buenos Aires Tango World Championship 2026, an event that will bring together dancers, teachers, judges and audiences from different countries across the region.

The competition is organised by Tango Temptation, under the direction of Zsolt Szénási, with the support of the Embassy of the Argentine Republic in HungaryOTP Travel, and the Sándor Demján Foundation, and will take place within the framework of a festival celebrating tango as one of Argentina’s most representative cultural expressions and as a bridge connecting communities and traditions.

Under the motto “Competition as inspiration, not separation”, this new edition will combine competitive rounds with artistic and social activities open to the public, reaffirming Budapest’s place as one of the main centres for the promotion of Argentine tango in Europe.

The preliminary will include the official Tango de Pista category, intended exclusively for participants from European countries. The winners will earn the opportunity to represent the region in the final stage of the Tango World Championship in Buenos Aires. In addition, the competition will feature non-official categories: Vals, Milonga and Milonguero, which are open to participants of all nationalities and without geographical restrictions.

As part of the program, the winners of the official category will perform at the Grand Milonga on Saturday, 25 April, opening for the show by Cristian Cerezo and Valentín Arias, while on Sunday, 26 April, all competitors will take part in the Masters’ Ronda, one of the most outstanding moments of the event.

In addition to the competition, the festival will offer milongas, classes, dance exhibitions, product showcases (exclusive-design Argentine tango shoes, Malbec wine tastings, etc.) and other special activities, with the aim of further promoting Argentine tango as a living cultural heritage that is constantly expanding and has a strong international projection.

Hosting this preliminary round in Budapest confirms the steady growth of the tango scene in Hungary and throughout the region, and represents a new opportunity to strengthen cultural ties between Argentina and Europe through one of the most emblematic expressions of Argentine identity.

Registration for competitors is now open. Special promotional packages are available, subject to availability. Participation in other festival activities will require separate registration.

More information on rules, registration, and terms of participation can be found on the event’s official channels.
