Harmony as the Key to Oman’s Enduring Success

Edited by Anna Popper

The Sultanate of Oman’s National Day, observed annually on 18 November, is a cherished occasion that celebrates the nation’s rich history, cultural identity and notable achievements. It also honours the birthday of the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said, whose leadership shaping five decades of growth and change from 1970 to 2020, transformed Oman into a modern, prosperous state and instilled a deep sense of national pride.

Oman gained its independence from Portuguese colonisation in 1650, establishing itself as the oldest independent state in the Arab world. This milestone is central to the National Day festivities, which serve as a vibrant reminder of the Sultanate’s enduring sovereignty and progress.

The 54th National Day, celebrated on 18 November 2024, marked another chapter in the nation’s journey, spotlighting its significant accomplishments and aspirations for the future. Since assuming the throne on 11 January 2021, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik has upheld the legacy of his predecessor while ushering Oman into a new era of development. His inspirational leadership has been instrumental in the success of the ‘Renewed Renaissance’, an ambitious vision driving comprehensive growth across various sectors.

Over the past five years, Oman has made impressive strides in economic diversification by implementing a comprehensive strategy to reduce dependency on oil revenues and undertaking structural reforms to boost non-oil sectorsinnovation and sustainability. Infrastructure projects have enhanced connectivity, while investments in education and healthcare continue to improve the quality of life for its citizens.

On the international front, Oman’s diplomacy has strengthened regional relations, contributing to peace and stability, and promoting the message of the core values of tolerance, understanding, coexistence, cooperation, social harmony and cultural integration worldwide.

On the occasion of the 54th National Day, His Excellency Malallah Bin Mahmood Al Balushi, Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to Hungary, hosted a grand diplomatic reception at the Four Seasons Hotel, Gresham Palace in Budapest.

The event, attended by distinguished guests: high-ranking Hungarian officials, ambassadors and diplomats of the diplomatic community, representatives from cultural, business, and academic spheres, as well as Omani nationals, exemplified the spirit of the celebration.

The Art Nouveau-style venue of unique beauty, resplendent with seasonal decorations and the national colours and symbols of the Sultanate, set the tone for a day filled with warmth and friendship.

The festive program commenced with the national anthems of Oman and Hungary, resounding through the elegantly dressed audience, many of whom wore the national attire of their respective countries.

The Master of Ceremony invited His Excellency Ambassador Al Balushi to take the floor. After extending greetings to the Guests of Honour Mr. Miklós Lengyel, Deputy State Secretary for Training, Scholarship Programs, and Science Diplomacy at the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Her Excellency Dr. Madiha Ahmed Al Shaibaniya, Minister of Education of the Sultanate of Oman, and appreciating their gracious presence, Ambassador Al Balushi delivered his ceremonial speech dedicated to this significant occasion:

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is a great pleasure to welcome you as we celebrate Oman’s National Day. Today, we reflect on our nation’s remarkable journey – from the centuries before our Renaissance in 1970 to the ongoing progress of the past year. The theme I wish to focus on is harmony, a core value that lies at the heart of Oman’s identity.

For centuries, Oman has been a meeting point for diverse cultures and people, from traders to tribes, all working together towards shared goals. This spirit of cooperation continues today, shaping our nation and its achievements.

Harmony has been the key to Oman’s success, particularly in recent decades under the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq and the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

Oman’s foreign policy reflects its commitment to peace and dialogueWe believe in the power of dialogue and tolerance, and work to foster peace and harmony globally. Yet, the injustice we see around the world today is deeply concerning.

In particular, the ongoing situation in Palestine remains a source of grave concern. Oman calls for an immediate ceasefire, Israel’s withdrawal from the Palestinian territories, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. We must also be mindful of the dangerous confusion between Judaism as a religion and Zionism as a political ideology. This confusion fuels antisemitism and undermines efforts for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Oman stresses the importance of respecting international law as we work to uphold justice and prevent further suffering in Gaza and beyond.

At the same time, Oman recognizes that global challenges – whether wars, conflicts, or environmental crises – cannot be solved by military force, marginalization, or double standards. True security and stability come from constructive engagement based on justice, openness and harmony.

Regarding Bilateral Relations with Hungary: The Sultanate of Oman and Hungary enjoy excellent relations, which are based on mutual respect. Hungarians consider the Omani people to be friendly and peace-loving. The foreign policies of both countries are quite similar as reflected in the principle of non-interference in the affairs of other countries. Both counties strive to play a positive mediating role in resolving conflicts when requested.

In 2020, the Omani-Hungarian Joint Economic and Technical Committee was established in Muscat.

The first meeting of the Joint Committee was held in the Hungarian capital Budapest, in 2023. The meeting was co-chaired by H.E. Dr. Tamás Varga, Deputy Minister of Defence of Hungary and H.E. Sheikh Khalifa bin Ali Al Harthy, Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry for Political Affairs of Oman.

The second meeting of the Joint Committee was held in Muscat in October 2024. The outcomes were highly beneficial for both countries.

High-level visits continue to take place between both countries. Chairman of the Omani Shura Council, H.E. Khalid bin Hilal Al Maawali visited Hungary in May this year in response to a visit by his counterpart, H.E László Kövér, Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament.

The two countries collaborate on scholarships through Hungary’s Stipendium Hungaricum programme, offering 50 spots for Omani master’s and doctoral students, while Oman provides 10 scholarships annually for Hungarians to study Arabic.

Oman values the establishment of direct flights between Budapest and Salalah, which boost Hungarian tourism to Oman and encouraging Omani citizens to visit Hungary.

Domestically, Oman is making significant strides under Vision 2040, focusing on sustainable development and social progress. We are committed to empowering young people, women and all segments of society. Our fiscal strategy aims for balance and we have seen positive economic results, including an upgrade in our credit rating.

We are also leading the way in clean energy, with ambitious plans for green hydrogen production and a commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

On this National Day, we proudly celebrate the awarding of the UNESCO-Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Conservation, a reflection of Oman’s enduring commitment to environmental protection on the world stage.

In line with the royal directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, Her Excellency Dr. Madiha Ahmed Al Shaibaniya, Minister of Education and Chairperson of the Oman National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science, presented the UNESCO-Sultan Qaboos Prize yesterday at the World Science Forum in Budapest. I am honoured to have Her Excellency with us today.

This year’s laureate, the Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust (NaDEET), was honoured for its impactful contributions to environmental education and awareness. Established in 1989 through a partnership between Oman and UNESCO, this biennial prize embodies Oman’s dedication to fostering international cooperation for a more sustainable future.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Oman remains dedicated to peace, prosperity and sustainability. As we look ahead, we will continue to uphold our values of harmony and cooperation both within our borders and on the global stage.

I wish to thank Mr. Omar Al Zijali, First Secretary of the Embassy, and all members of our local staff for organising this event.

Thank you for being here today and for your continued support of Oman’s journey.”

The Reception

The official proceedings were followed by a lavish reception, where guests were treated to a selection of exquisite specialties. Tables were set with a variety of gourmet dishes that combined local and international flavours. Fine appetizers and succulent main courses were prepared with culinary mastery to delight the senses.

Special attention was given to decadent desserts made from premium dates, showcasing the natural sweetness and rich savour of the fruit. These desserts offered a delicious fusion of textures, beautifully complemented by ingredients such as almonds, pistachios and a touch of honey that enhanced their taste and created a harmonious blend of flavours. Dates hold a special place in Arab culture and gastronomy, symbolizing hospitality, abundance and blessings. They are an essential part of festive occasions, being also used creatively in artistic or thematic forms that are visually appealing. The tradition of offering dates reflects respect towards guests.

The joyful atmosphere exuded warmth and conviviality, with lively conversations flowing naturally. Guests mingled effortlessly, forging connections and sharing unforgettable moments, making the event truly memorable.
