On 12 September 2024, the Embassy of Malaysia in Budapest hosted an official diplomatic reception on the occasion of four important milestones: the 67th National Day and 61st Malaysia Day, the 55th Anniversary of Malaysia-Hungary Diplomatic Relations, and the upcoming 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship of Malaysia.
Hosted by H.E. Francisco Munis, Ambassador of Malaysia to Hungary, and Mrs. Patricia Linus Lojiu at the Budapest Marriott Hotel, the event welcomed over 200 distinguished invitees, including the Guest of Honour, Mr. Adam Stifter, Deputy State Secretary for the Development of Eastern Relations, as well as officials from the Hungarian government, local authorities, ambassadors, members of the Diplomatic Corps, NGOs, think tanks, business leaders, media representatives, Malaysian nationals and friends of this remarkable Southeast Asian country.
The commemoration started with the national anthems of the two countries. It was followed by the address of Ambassador Munis, underscoring Malaysia’s achievements and journey as a progressive nation, the enduring friendship and active relations between Malaysia and Hungary, and Malaysia’s readiness to assume the 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship.
Reflecting on Malaysia’s vibrant journey, marked by resilience through diverse challenges and periods of growth and development, the country’s progress has been made possible by the unity and harmony of its people and the vision of forward-looking leaders whose dedication drives nation’s advancement.
Rooted in the values of peace, humanity, justice, and equality, Malaysia’s foreign policy is driven by a commitment to fostering a just and equitable community of nations. This approach has established Malaysia as a friendly nation that actively contributes to international peace, stability and prosperity. In the context of Malaysia-Hungary relations, the Ambassador stated that since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1969, the two countries have nurtured a cordial and warm relationship based on shared values and mutual respect, exemplifying an enriching and mature friendship.
Decades of consistent engagement between the leaders and people of both countries have resulted in numerous formal collaborations in several mutually beneficial areas of common interest. These have been solidified through the signing of strategic bilateral agreements and MOUs, covering diverse fields such as trade and investment, education, agriculture, visa waivers, fiscal and taxation policies, information, air services, and scientific and technological cooperation.
In recent years, frequent exchanges between the public and private sectors have raised awareness and interest in the potential of Malaysian-Hungarian relations. These visits have deepened mutual understanding and opened doors for collaboration in untapped areas including tourism, culture, environmental initiatives, security, healthcare, renewable energy and the digital economy.
The year 2024 marks the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Hungary. As both countries celebrate this significant milestone, the outlook for bilateral and multilateral collaborations is promising. The Ambassador is eager to elevate Malaysian-Hungarian relations through increased engagement, cooperation, and exchanges, particularly in boosting total trade, which reached 660 million euros in 2023.
Looking ahead, the Ambassador is optimistic that the recent establishment of the Joint Intergovernmental Committee for Economic and Industrial Cooperation (JIEC) between Malaysia and Hungary will further enhance trade and investment exchanges in the coming years.
The 90-day visa-free agreement between the two countries will further complement efforts to strengthen the bilateral foundation and promote people-to-people connections and interactions in business and tourism. This initiative enhances the prospects for future mutually beneficial cooperation. Malaysia highly values its friendship with Hungary and is committed to maximizing the potential of Malaysian-Hungarian bonds.
Regarding Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship, the Ambassador reiterated that as one of ASEAN’s founding members, Malaysia had advocated and constructively played significant role in developing a peaceful ASEAN. Under its Chairmanship, Malaysia will continue to foster and promote the vision of a united ASEAN standing as a formidable regional bloc and promote the importance of ASEAN Centrality and ASEAN as a Zone of Peace, Freedom and Neutrality.
Stressing Malaysia’s readiness to chair ASEAN in 2025, the Ambassador also welcomed Hungary’s intention to join the ASEAN Treaty of Amity and Cooperation, expressing hope that Hungary’s accession to the treaty can be finalized soon. Malaysia also wishes for a successful Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Hungary’s commitment to the principle of ASEAN centrality and its efforts to promote ASEAN-EU relations during its EU Presidency will significantly contribute to strengthening ties between ASEAN and the EU, as well as enhancing Malaysian-EU relations.
Representing the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr. Ádám Stifter, Deputy State Secretary for the Development of Eastern Relations, was invited to address the audience:
“Excellencies, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, I am sincerely grateful for the honourable invitation from the Embassy of Malaysia to address you on the 67th Anniversary of Malaysia’s Declaration of Independence and the 61st Malaysia Day. I extend my thanks to the Embassy for hosting today’s celebration and congratulate Your Excellency Ambassador Munis and the Malaysian people on the tremendous progress the country has achieved over more than six decades.
I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the fruitful bilateral relations between Hungary and Malaysia and to express hope that today’s event will serve as an occasion to celebrate our shared achievements and further strengthen our ongoing initiatives.
This year, we celebrate the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Hungary and Malaysia. Since 1969, our cooperation has grown in various fields, overcoming geographic distances. I am proud to say that our political relations, built on mutual respect and friendship, are now stronger than ever. We cooperate closely within international organizations and share a commitment to a rules-based international order and multilateral solutions to global challenges.
Hungary’s Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó, visited Malaysia in March, and we look forward to his upcoming visit to Kuala Lumpur to co-chair the inaugural session of the Intergovernmental Committee for Economic and Industrial Cooperation between Hungary and Malaysia. The frequency of these high-level dialogues highlights both countries’ commitment to enhancing our multifaceted relations.
We believe that in today’s global landscape, it is essential to establish mutually beneficial political and economic partnerships with countries that share similar values. Hungary aspires to serve as a bridge between Eastern and Western economies, and Malaysia stands as a key partner in Southeast Asia and a cornerstone in Hungary’s Eastern Opening strategy. As a founding member of ASEAN, Malaysia has demonstrated its ambitions regionally and globally, significantly contributing to stability and security in Southeast Asia and beyond. We commend Malaysia’s dedication to global stability.
Economic cooperation between Hungary and Malaysia has reached new heights in recent years. Malaysia is Hungary’s second-largest trading partner among ASEAN countries, and we are committed to expanding opportunities for collaboration in various sectors. We are pleased that bilateral trade continues to grow, reaching over 828 million USD last year.
The inaugural session of the Intergovernmental Committee for Economic and Industrial Cooperation is anticipated as a crucial forum for advancing economic and trade relations. This institutional framework provides an excellent platform to explore areas of cooperation based on mutual interest, and I am confident that it will give new impetus to our economic ties across a broad range of sectors.
Education is another vital aspect of our bilateral relations, as collaboration in higher education and skills development is a long-term investment that strengthens people-to-people connections and enhances our scientific, economic, and political ties. Hungary has actively pursued deeper cooperation in skills development, education, science, and technology. I am proud to note the evolution of Hungarian-Malaysian academic relations and inter-institutional cooperation.
Each year, Hungary offers 40 scholarships to Malaysian students through the Stipendium Hungaricum Programme, aimed at promoting international cooperation, diversity in higher education, and global competitiveness. Since its inception in 2016, the program has grown increasingly popular in Malaysia, with 122 students applying this year.
The past 55 years of bilateral relations between Hungary and Malaysia inspire us to deepen our cooperation further. Hungary remains committed to developing our partnership with Malaysia. In today’s rapidly changing world, reliable and stable partners are indispensable, and we look forward to working together on the basis of mutual respect and shared interests for the benefit of both our nations.
On this note, allow me once again to extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes on Malaysia’s 67th Independence Day and 61st Malaysia Day. Thank you for your attention.”
The Reception
The official part of the celebrations concluded with a vibrant reception, where a delightful array of Malaysian and international culinary specialties were offered, accompanied by exceptional hospitality. The atmosphere was infused with warmth and friendship, which was greatly appreciated by all in attendance. This joyful gathering not only commemorated Malaysia’s national milestones and anniversaries, but also strengthened the bonds between the two countries, leaving lasting memories for the participants.
Flag-Hoisting Ceremony
In keeping with tradition, the Malaysian Ambassador, H.E. Francisco Munis, hosted a flag raising ceremony and reception at the Embassy of Malaysia in Budapest to commemorate the 67th National Day and the 61st Malaysia Day. The event featured a wide choice of Malaysian dishes and various activities for families. The festive gathering was held on 31 August 2024 within the Chancery compound and welcomed about 200 members of the Malaysian community living and working in Hungary.
Malaysia Madani, a new slogan – a unifying message for the country
In Malaysia, it has become customary for a new prime minister to introduce a new slogan early in their tenure. Usually, these slogans symbolize the government’s strategic focus, guiding policies, distinguishing their administration from previous ones, and articulating goals, priorities, governance approach, and a vision for addressing current and future challenges.
In January 2023, the new Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim introduced Malaysia Madani (Civil Malaysia), a slogan, concept and national policy initiative aimed at restoring Malaysia’s prominence and prestige on the global stage. Malaysia Madani embodies Prime Minister Anwar’s vision for a civilized, skilled, and inclusive society, aspiring to build a respected and prosperous nation. This vision is grounded in six core values: Sustainability, Prosperity, Innovation, Respect, Trust, and Compassion.
