For the third consecutive year, the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia in Hungary brought a vibrant slice of Croatia to the Hungarian capital with the “Touch of Croatia” event on 25 June 2025 at Europa Pont (Europe Point), the Representation of the European Commission in Budapest. The occasion offered a rich celebration of Croatian culture, gastronomy, and tourism, drawing a large audience, including members of the diplomatic corps, the business community, and Croatians and Hungarians living in Budapest.

In his welcome remarks, Gábor Zupkó, Head of the European Commission Representation in Hungary, emphasized that showcasing the diversity of the European Union is a core mission of the institution, and that hosting Croatia as a guest country provides an excellent opportunity to highlight the cultural richness of EU member states.

H.E. Dr. Mladen Andrlić, Ambassador of Croatia to Hungary, reflected on the origins of the initiative, noting:

“We launched this concept to mark the 10th anniversary of Croatia’s accession to the European Union. Our goal was to present Croatia in a truly subsidiary way by highlighting the richness of our country through its counties, cities, and municipalities.”
This year’s edition spotlighted the regional flavours and heritage of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, the City of Požega, and the Municipality of Sračinec, each offering visitors a unique insight into Croatian tradition and identity.
Showcasing Regional Strengths
Representing Primorje-Gorski Kotar County were Deputy Prefect Toni Štimac and Maja Baković, Head of Promotion at the Rijeka Tourist Board. Štimac emphasized the county’s multifaceted appeal: “This is a valuable opportunity to raise awareness of our region – not only for its natural beauty and tourism potential, but also as an attractive destination for investment.”

The Požega delegation was led by Mayor Prof. Dr. Borislav Miličević, accompanied by Mirna Šimunović Svoboda, Director of the Požega Tourist Board, and Dr. Berislav Andrlić, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Tourism and Rural Development.
“This event allows us to authentically present our small but charming town and introduce our traditions, culture, and identity to potential partners, all in the service of sustainable tourism,” said Mayor Miličević.

The Municipality of Sračinec was represented by Mayor Božidar Novoselec, Deputy Mayor Kruno Lukačić, and Eva Friščić from the Preslica cultural association. Mayor Novoselec praised the enduring ties with Hungarian partners: “We have excellent cooperation with our Hungarian friends. Through various joint projects, frequent collaborations with the Croatian Embassy, and business exchanges, we have built a meaningful and productive relationship.”

Culture in Motion
A dynamic cultural program delighted the participants. Highlights included the spectacular performances by the Požega Majorettes. “Our majorettes serve as ambassadors of Požega. They travel extensively and represent our city at many events and competitions. This appearance was a special experience for them,” said Marina Mihelčić, leader of the dance studio.

Trenk’s Pandurs, a historical military re-enactment group honouring the legacy of Baron Franjo Trenk, were also present. “We preserve the military history of Baron Trenk and his Pandurs, who served between 1741 and 1749,” explained Vladimir Potnar, President of the historical unit.

A Postcard of Croatia in the Heart of Europe
Following the formal program, the celebration continued in the picturesque garden of Millenáris Park, where guests were invited to explore Croatia through its most enticing senses: taste, scent, and sound. A generous offering of regional delicacies, traditional recipes, and live music ensured an immersive Croatian experience.

The festive atmosphere was enhanced by the Ivica Bumba Band, a tamburitza ensemble from Požega, whose performance added an authentic musical touch to the event. “Even though I travel to Croatia often, I still discover new aspects of it through events like this. These presentations and films reveal regions I haven’t yet visited and inspire me to explore further,” shared Ivan Gugan, President of the Croatian Self-Government in Hungary.

Now a well-established tradition, “Touch of Croatia” continues to grow as a unique platform for cultural diplomacy, people-to-people contacts, and cross-border cooperation – offering a vivid postcard of Croatia in the heart of Europe.

Year by year, Croatia attracts increasing attention and engagement, providing a chance to discover the vibrant historical and cultural heritage, unique beauty and distinctive tourist attractions of one of the most beautiful destinations in the EU.
