On 13 January 2026, His Excellency Mr. Tetsuya Kimura, Japan’s new Ambassador to Hungary, presented his Letters of Credence to His Excellency Dr. Tamás Sulyok, President of Hungary, during a ceremony at the Sándor Palace in Budapest. With this act, Ambassador Kimura officially commenced his mission as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Hungary.

Following the ceremony, Ambassador Kimura conveyed greetings and a message from His Majesty the Emperor of Japan to President Sulyok and reaffirmed his commitment to further deepening the friendly relations and cooperation between Japan and Hungary. He emphasized his intention to work closely with Hungarian partners and society to strengthen bilateral relations in a wide range of fields.

In line with diplomatic tradition, Ambassador Kimura then laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Heroes’ Square to commemorate the nation’s sacrifices and pay tribute to Hungary’s heritage.

Ambassador Kimura brings extensive diplomatic experience to his post in Budapest. Prior to his appointment, he served as Ambassador to Timor-Leste. Notably, between 1989 and 1991, during his first diplomatic assignment in Austria, he visited Hungary at a time of profound transformation in Central and Eastern Europe. Now, returning to Hungary as Ambassador, he described the posting as a great honour.
Japan and Hungary enjoy long-standing ties rooted in mutual respect and shared values. In 2024, the two countries marked the 155th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, reflecting the depth and continuity of their partnership. Cooperation today spans numerous areas, including diplomacy, economy, innovation, culture, education, and sport.
Japan has long been an important contributor to Hungary’s economic development. Around 180 Japanese companies operate in Hungary, providing employment for approximately 30,000 people. In this spirit, Ambassador Kimura reaffirmed his determination to continue joint efforts to further strengthen and develop the solid partnership between the two countries.
Welcome to Hungary, Your Excellency!
