In 2024, Algeria proudly commemorates the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of its historic Liberation Revolution, a pivotal event that changed the nation’s history forever. The uprising, which began on 1 November 1954, marked the start of the Algerian War of Independence, ultimately leading to the country’s liberation from colonial rule on 5 July 1962. Known as the “November 1 Revolution”, this movement was the culmination of the Algerian people’s resistance to French colonial domination that began in 1830.
The revolution was not only a defining moment for Algeria, but also an inspiration to people around the world who continue to fight for freedom and sovereignty. This anniversary provides an opportunity to honour the sacrifices of those who fought for independence, reflect on the enduring legacy of the revolution, and celebrate the nation’s achievements over the past seven decades. It is a time for unity and pride as Algerians remember the resilience and determination that have shaped their identity and future.
Algeria, the largest country in Africa and the 10th largest in the world, covers an area of 2,381,741 km² and is home to appr. 46 million people.
To mark this significant occasion, His Excellency Mr. Abdelhafid Alahoum, Ambassador of Algeria to Hungary, hosted a diplomatic reception at the Marriott Hotel in Budapest. The event was attended by Hungarian officials, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives from business, cultural, and academic circles, as well as Algerian nationals, members of the Algerian Association in Hungary and friends of Algeria. The gathering celebrated Algeria’s independence and sovereignty, bringing together dignitaries and guests to honour its historic journey and ongoing progress.
The celebration commenced with an introduction by the speakers, who also acted as Masters of Ceremony, representing various regions of the country in stunning traditional costumes.
It was succeeded by the stirring renditions of the national anthems of Algeria and Hungary.
Following this, the Ambassador took the stage to welcome the Guest of Honour, Mr. Tamás Vargha, Deputy Minister of Defence, Parliamentary State Secretary, and Co-Chair of the Hungarian-Algerian Joint Economic Commission, also extending greetings to the representatives of diplomatic missions and international organizations accredited to Hungary, expressing gratitude for their presence. In his solemn address, the Ambassador said:
“It is a pleasure to welcome you, along with the staff of the Algerian Embassy in Budapest, on the occasion of the Algerian National Day, which this year marks the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the 1 November 1954 Revolution under the slogan ‘Glorious November, Loyalty, and Renewal’.
I am delighted that you have joined us to commemorate this glorious liberation revolution embraced by the Algerian people, which wrote one of history’s greatest epics in the face of a brutal colonial settlement that lasted 132 years and included genocide and crimes against humanity.
I am especially pleased to welcome His Excellency Mr. Tamás Vargha, Deputy Minister of Defence, Parliamentary State Secretary, and Co-Chair of the Hungarian-Algerian Joint Economic Commission, along with all the representatives of the host country. Hungary and Algeria have historical relations based on friendship and mutual respect, dating back to the period of Algeria’s national liberation war.
Dear Guests,
Today we recall one of the most significant milestones of struggle and resistance in contemporary history. During this period, Algeria made immense sacrifices and its martyrs shed their blood for the soil of their homeland. This milestone has become a model and beacon for people under occupation today, particularly the Palestinian and Western Sahrawi peoples.
The 1 November 1954 Declaration remains a steadfast reference for Algeria’s sovereign positions, influential diplomacy and promising economy, which ranks among the strongest in Africa and the Arab world. This Declaration embodied an integrated vision of building a democratic society that seeks to reclaim its rights and national sovereignty while achieving its aspirations for independence and prosperity.
Under the wise leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Algeria is moving steadily toward a better political, economic, and social future. This progress is evidenced by rising economic growth, increased GDP, and expanding foreign exchange reserves. Significant reforms, including a new investment law that provides incentives and administrative ease for investors, are transforming Algeria’s business climate and fostering economic development and national industry. Major projects have been launched to accelerate development and improve infrastructure across the country, including the expansion of road, rail and transport networks. In the southern regions, substantial investments in agriculture aim to achieve food security, increase GDP contributions, and boost food processing industries to allow Algerian products to access foreign markets. In addition, social advancements have enhanced living standards and reinforced the social character of the state.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Algerian-Hungarian relations are deeply rooted in history, tracing back to the early days of our liberation revolution. Algeria remembers Hungary’s solidarity during the liberation war, notably through the Hungarian Radio’s ‘Voice of Algeria’ program, which was among the first to broadcast the 1 November 1954 Declaration. This act demonstrated Hungary’s support for colonized peoples’ right to self-determination.
Diplomatic relations between our two nations have since expanded into various economic and political fields, supported by numerous cooperation agreements. Today, we strive to broaden these relations into cultural exchanges, pharmaceutical industry, green energy initiatives, energy efficiency projects, and the development of small and medium-sized enterprises, aligned with Algeria’s new investment law.
I would also like to highlight the outcomes of the Algerian-Hungarian Joint Economic Committee meeting held in Hungary in February 2023.
In addition, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, paid a visit to Budapest in September 2023 to meet his counterpart.
These engagements provided opportunities to exchange views on shared challenges and deepen collaboration.
It is noteworthy that, following its well-deserved election in 2023, Algeria now plays a key role in the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member for two-year terms 2024-2025.
Algeria is eager to further enhance its relationship with Hungary, reflecting the historical ties and potential of both nations. In this regard, we anticipate the joint historical exhibition between the Algerian National Archives and its Hungarian counterpart, scheduled to take place in Hungary next year, as well as the upcoming visit of Mr Péter Szijjártó, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, to Algeria.
Thank you for your attention, and once again, I extend my warmest greetings on this precious national occasion.”
“Long live Algeria, and glory and immortality to our faithful martyrs!”
Representing the Hungarian Government, Mr. Tamás Vargha, Deputy Minister of Defence, addressed the audience:
“Ladies and Gentlemen, it is an honour and a privilege to be here with you tonight to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Algerian War of Independence.
Throughout Hungary’s more than 1,000-year history, we have had to fight repeatedly for our independence, freedom and sovereignty. It fills me with great pride to stand here today to honour these shared values, side by side with my Algerian friends, who also fought bravely for their freedom and independence.
Hungary was one of the first countries to recognize Algeria’s independence and establish an embassy in Algiers, which has positively influenced our bilateral relations to this day.
The Hungarian-Algerian Joint Economic Commission is a cornerstone of our relations. From Hungary’s perspective, we greatly value this Commission and express our gratitude for the proactive and collaborative efforts of the Algerian side. I am also personally honoured to serve as the Co-Chair of the Hungarian delegation. Over the years, our two countries have signed numerous agreements deepening both political and economic ties. We are encouraged by the growth of our bilateral trade and see significant untapped potential in areas such as agriculture, railway construction, water management, energy, and healthcare.
We look forward to the forthcoming session in Algeria in the first half of 2025, which will give new impetus to our bilateral political and economic relations.
Furthermore, I would like to highlight a historical and symbolic example of our connection: the iconic 5th July 1962 Stadium in Algiers, modelled after Budapest’s Népstadion. This is a lasting symbol of our shared history.
Hungary also highly values Algeria’s efforts in strengthening border control mechanisms and combating migrant smuggling routes that affect both North Africa and Europe. Within the framework of EU-Africa cooperation, Hungary has been working with Algeria to support joint initiatives aimed at addressing the root causes of migration and conflict. We recognize Algeria’s significant role in combating illegal migration and terrorism, as well as in contributing to regional peace and security.
Last but not least, I am proud and honoured to be here with you to celebrate this exceptional anniversary of the struggle for sovereignty, freedom and independence. On the special occasion of your National Day, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Your Excellency and my best wishes to the people of Algeria. We hope to continue strengthening our cordial relationship in the future. Thank you for your kind attention!”
The official proceedings concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony, performed by the Algerian Ambassador and the Guest of Honour.
It was succeeded by a lavish reception, where guests were treated to a delightful array of Algerian specialties, including the renowned Couscous Royal, an exquisite dish rich in tradition and flavour, perfectly complemented by fine Algerian wines. It offered a wonderful opportunity for guests to experience the warmth of Algerian hospitality and engage in lively conversation, further strengthening the bonds of friendship between nations.
The guests also had the pleasure of admiring an exhibition of paintings by the Algerian artist Beghdadi Badreddine, who resides in Hungary, while vividly depicts evocative scenes and moments from his homeland.
